An online bank has been revealed as the force behind the mysterious mural adorning the iconic Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club.
Locals have been perplexed as to why the club, which is usually sand coloured, has been steadily turning a fetching shade of aqua over the past fortnight and now boasts a cartoon pineapple, frog, prawn, lobster and blue swimmer crab.
It turns out neobank 86 400 funded the artwork, which symbolises the Aussie slang various bank notes.
The bank has paid the club $25,000 which will nicely bolster the club house’s renovation fund.
This isn’t the first time the club house has undergone a dramatic makeover in the name of raising money for its long awaited $4.5 million renovation dreams.
In 2018 the rant of a groom to be, which he later clarified was in jest, went viral after he bemoaned the presence of a giant prawn plastered on the wall which was revealed as a nod to thong maker Havaianas who also donated $25,000.
Surf club president Tim Murray said after a decade of furious fundraising the club volunteers were tantalising close to their goal of renovating the decaying clubhouse.
“We’re very close and we expect to have construction underway next year,” Mr Murray said.
“The club is really non-compliant so it’s dangerous and it’s falling apart.”
Mr Murray said after the extensive renovations were complete not only would the clubhouse be better suited to the needs of their 350 members and nippers but they also hoped to more than double the number of community groups using the facility.
Rob Bell, CEO of 86 400 – whose name stands for the number of seconds in a day – said they were thrilled to be able to help with fundraising and also get the word out about their new online only bank.
“It’s a little bit of fun and we think it’ll get people talking,” Mr Bell said.
“It’s about creating a bit of awareness there’s a new bank out there.”
In addition to the $25,000 donation, for every Aussie who signs up to 86 400 using the code ‘SMART10’ and makes a purchase, the bank will donate another $10 for Tamarama SLSC plus the user gets $10 cash for themselves as well.
The new paint job will remain on the surf club until early January.
