ALMOST 900 girls and boys battled it out on the refurbished Waverley netball courts on Saturday for the final day of competition.
Eastern Suburbs Combined Primary Schools Netball Association (ESCPSNA) president Sara Hawkins said it was a “nailbiting” grand final for the Year 6 girls with a score of 35-34.
“It was fantastic and everything we hoped for,” she said. “We had all the girls on the sideline with streamers and cheering.
“The best thing was the game itself — it didn’t go into extra time but almost could have. They’re the sort of games you want to watch.”
The NSW Swifts captain Abbey McCullough presented the winners — Rose Bay Rock Stars who beat St Francis Green Machine — with the prestigious Perpetual Trophy.
“We had a microphone, we did a little Q and A,” Ms Hawkins said.
“She spoke to them about how she started as a little kid as well but also the importance of eating well.”
Ms Hawkins said the winter competition had been going every Saturday for 40 years at the Waverley courts.
Originally only Catholic primary schools participated but it now includes a variety of 14 local schools.
“It’s a really friendly, fun competition ... but competitive at the same time,” she said.
“Netball is definitely growing in popularity because it’s just a good game.
“The girls really make lasting friendships ... there were also about eight boys.”
Ms Hawkins said they were grateful Waverley Council had built an extra three multipurpose netball courts and installed lighting for all six courts. New competition starts next May.
