SCOTT MORRISON has issued a stern warning to the people of Wentworth that a vote for Kerryn Phelps will “risk the stability and certainty of our government”.
In an exclusive interview, Mr Morrison told the Wentworth Courier the party was taking “nothing for granted” ahead of the October 20 by-election
“We’re up against some very tough opposition, there are several Labor candidates running in this by-election and one of them, Kerryn, is heavily supported by the Labor Party,” Mr Morrison said.
“She’s not there to help the government or create the sort of certainty we need to continue on the work of keeping our economy strong and delivering the tax cuts we’ve outlined whether it’s for small business or personal tax payers.” The comments chime with Liberal flyers attacking Dr Phelps, dropped into letterboxes across the electorate in recent days. Dr Phelps has slammed the ads as “nasty”.
Mr Morrison said a vote for anyone other than Mr Sharma “will throw into question many issues” but stopped short of saying he would call an early general election. “I’ll call the election when I believe it’s time to call the election. It will be next year,” he said. “What I am saying is uncertainty and instability in the parliament will not be good for the parliament. It won’t be good for the country, it won’t be good for investment.”
Mr Morrison bestowed $500,000 in federal funding to light the stretch from Gap Park, along the cliff top through to Christison Park and Macquarie Lighthouse. Mr Sharma said the funding would bring light to a dark and lonely place.
