IF YOU’VE ever fantasised about owning a jockstrap worn by Russell Crowe, you’re in luck. Whilst his divorce from Danielle Spencer is being finalised, Crowe is selling a wide range of personal items and memorabilia in an auction by Sotheby’s Australia.
In a statement, Crowe explained “Divorce has its way of making you really examine the things that are essential in life ... and the things that are not. Through the process I had a look around and realised I had a lot of stuff... So in the spirit of moving forward into fresh air, here’s a portion of that collection of stuff.”
“The Art Of Divorce” is estimated to make between $2.6 million and $3.7 million. No comment was given to the Wentworth Courier by Sotheby’s or Crowe’s representatives as to whether this was going to charity.
Amongst the 227 items listed are several prominent artworks including two by Charles Blackman paintings. ‘The Suitor’ (1960) is estimated at $180-220k whilst ‘Gymkhana Visitors’ (1961), is expected to sell somewhere between $200-250k. If you don’t want to re-mortgage your house however, there are some other, more affordable items on the list.
‘Gladiator’ fans can purchase two life-size prop horses (estimated $2-4k each), a fully functioning replica of a roman chariot ($5-10k) or the stunt cuirass from Maximus’ death scene ($20-30k). Or if you want to get really intimate, Rusty’s jockstrap from ‘Cinderella Man’ is also up for grabs, estimated at $500-$600.
Most people already know Crowe as a huge sports fan so it comes as no surprise that endless Rugby and Cricket memorabilia are available including a signed and framed Jonah Lomu All Blacks jersey.
Music is evidently another big passion of Crowe’s with countless guitars and Johnny Cash memorabilia listed. A violin by Leandro Bisiach Snr dated 1890 and used by Crowe in ‘Master and Commander’ is also on the list, estimated to sell between $110k and $140k.
Unless Rusty enjoys wearing women’s jewellery on the weekend (no judgement), it looks like Danielle’s things are also up for auction including a platinum, 18CT white gold, yellow diamond ring estimated $70-100k.
The catalogue will be on exhibition for four days prior to the auction which begins at 6pm on April 7th (which, coincidentally - or not - is also Rusty’s birthday and wedding anniversary). Sotheby’s did not confirm whether Crowe himself would be in attendance.
