An Aussie wakeboarding champion was handed a harsh warning from a magistrate after a shocking expletive-laden tirade levelled at police during a drunken night out.

Hayden Bru, 20, of Forster, pleaded guilty to hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty and failing to leave premises at the Royal Randwick Racecourse last year.

Waverley Local Court on Wednesday heard police asked Bru to leave the racecourse on November 1 following an incident with a member of his group.

According to police documents tendered to court, Bru told police to “f**k off” and called them “c***s” and “f**ing dog” before an increasingly heated altercation led police to arrest him.

The court heard that prior to the incident, Bru’s sporting talent saw him propelled onto the professional wakeboarding circuit at the age of 14, where he travelled as far as the US, Canada and Mexico to compete.

The promising athlete had recently been placed fourth at an international competition and competed for the first time as an adult, the court heard.

Bru’s lawyer Mr Vanzino said his client was aware his behaviour on the night of the incident had been “appalling” but asked the court for leniency considering the young man’s age and the fact that while his future as a professional wakeboarder was in doubt.

Mr Vanzino also asked the court to take into account previous “traumas” suffered by the young man in recent years.

The court heard that while competing overseas last year, Bru’s mother and sister were held at gunpoint in an unrelated alleged criminal incident.

The young man also underwent a knee reconstruction following an injury that put his future in the sport in jeopardy.

Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge acknowledged the man’s good character references and recognised his parents had both appeared at court to support him.

However, Ms Milledge told the court she was unconvinced Bru’s past stresses excused what she described as “awful language” used by the sporting star toward police.

“I don’t accept for one minute that you had any reason to go off at the police like that,” Magistrate Milledge said.

“You had too much to drink and used that awful language against police.

“Police don’t deserve to be treated that way. ”You should really be ashamed of yourself.”

Magistrate Milledge did not record a conviction against Bru, who was instead sentenced to a two-year conditional release order under a condition requiring him to reappear in court if called to do so.
