Around 3000 residents have been without powers for six hours across Sydney’s east.
Ausgrid reports that the outage occurred in the Potts Point area at 5.35am Thursday and was classified as “moderate”, meaning there is a 4-8 hour impact time.
There are currently 2688 properties impacted by the blackout, with the Ausgrid website originally stating 7000 were left without power.
An Ausgrid spokeswoman said the “very likely cause is an underground power fault”, however the issue was still under investigation.
An underground power fault can be caused by rain and muggy conditions if moisture enters the insulation of the cables.
The spokeswoman said “restoration is a priority” however hot, wet and humid weather conditions continued to apply pressure on the cables.
The outage is also impacting Darlinghurst, Elizabeth Bay, Paddington, Woolloomooloo, Kings Cross and Rushcutters Bay, and is expected to be restored around 1.30pm.
