Sydney is in a spin over the playful pasta dishes and funky orange wines at Alberto’s Lounge, which has topped the annual delicious 100 roundup of the most mouth-watering restaurants in NSW.

Chef Dan Pepperell (Restaurant Hubert, 10 William Street, Attica) has put his creative stamp on the menu of this Sydney CBD neighbourhood Italian restaurant and wine bar that was opened by the trio behind Team Swillhouse (Restaurant Hubert, Frankies), brothers Anton and Stefan Forte and Toby Hilton, last December.

General manager Benjamin Brown said the pasta, that is made fresh in-house every day, included a mix of classics and Pepperell’s take on those classics like a bolognese dish made with green pappardelle pasta that has been soaked in spinach and peas.

While a trip to Italy has inspired spiced-up menu inclusions like the popular Trippa alla Romana — tripe in a butter chicken-flavoured braise.

Brown said while the menu had a solid Italian base, Pepperell was passionate about not being boxed in by labels.

“It is about not having too many boundaries around the food,” he said.

Alberto’s is also known for its selection of minimal intervention, funky orange wines, including their house wine that Anton created with Tasmania’s Joe Holyman.

Half of the wine list is dedicated to red wines, with Brown indicating the medium-bodied reds bode well with the menu, and there is a big selection of wines available by the glass.

While the dessert menu highlights include Pepperell’s gelato, with the hazelnut and pistachio flavours created with nut extract imported from Piedmont in Sicily.

Team Swillhouse has created a food and wine haven at Alberto’s Lounge that they would want to hang out in, Brown said.

“The vibe is pretty electric in the evening, it is eclectic with Italo disco funk; people are really enjoying it,” he said.
