NAPLAN Sydney eastern suburbs schools: McAuley Catholic top school

A modest Catholic primary school achieved among the highest NAPLAN scores across the inner city and eastern suburbs despite competition from some of the country’s most expensive educational institutions.
Newly released data for the 2019 tests has revealed McAuley Catholic Primary School in Rose Bay, which charges $1357 A year, scored top marks in the area for year 3 reading, spelling, grammar and also year 5 grammar.
The school also came in second for year 3 numeracy and third for year 3 writing and year 5 numeracy.
The star performer was Sydney Grammar School’s Edgecliff campus, where annual fees are $31,860 for year 3 and $33,531 for year 5.
Grammar boys topped the region in year 3 writing, spelling (jointly with McAuley), numeracy and year 5 reading, writing, spelling and numeracy.
They also scored second in year 3 reading, grammar and year 5 grammar.
McAuley principal Nicole Jones said it was the high expectations held by the teachers which contributed to their results.
“When you believe in your students they will believe in themselves,” Mrs Jones said.
“Our focus is educating the whole child by supporting them to thrive academically and socially.
“We encourage creative and critical thinkers that build confident children who love learning.
“Our aim is to provide well rounded education that equips our students for the future by making learning real and relevant. McAuley Catholic Primary School is an amazing school that offers so much to the students and their families.

Inner city and eastern suburbs school performed extremely well overall with only a handful receiving rankings below state or national averages.
Fort St Public School in the CBD got a 428 and Vaucluse Public School a 426 in year 3 writing which is below the state average of 429.2 but above the Australian mean score of 422.5.
In year 3 spelling, St Mary’s Cathedral College in the city scored 423 compared to the state average of 428.5 and national score of 418.9. The school also got just under the 507.9 state average for year 5 reading with a 507 but above the 506.1 national average.
Bondi Beach Public School was below average for year 5 writing and grammar and Kesser Torah College got a 496 for year 5 numeracy compared to the state mean of 500.1.
Other high achieving schools of note are Woollahra Public School which came second in year 5 writing, spelling and numeracy.
Paddington’s St Francis of Assisi was second for year 5 reading and spelling and third for year 5 grammar.
St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School Clovelly was third for year 5 reading, writing and numeracy.
St Catherine’s Waverley which scored third best, a 531 for year 3 reading, compared to the state average of 435.1.
Bellevue Hill Public School came in second for year 3 writing with a score of 478 compared to the NSW average of 429.2.
The Scots College Bellevue Hill snuck into third place for year 3 spelling with 495 compared to the mean NSW score of 428.5.
Edgecliff’s Ascham School students got an average of 547 for year 3 grammar ranking them third and dwarfing the NSW average of 446.5.
Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Woollahra students clocked an impressive 515 for year 3 numeracy ranking them third and placing them well above the 413.5 state average.
