An elderly man has been charged with allegedly sending harassing emails to a NSW Liberal MP. Police have now imposed a provisional protective order on the Sydney politician’s behalf.

A Sydney man has been charged with allegedly sending threatening emails to NSW MP Kellie Sloane.
Police arrested Michael Charles Edkins, 68, at Waverley police station on Tuesday morning and charged him with using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
In documents tendered to Waverley Local Court, police allege Edkins used an email and phone service “in such a way that a reasonable person would regard (it) as being menacing, harassing or offensive”.
The harassment is alleged to have occurred between June 13 and September 23 at Darling Point.
In a brief statement police confirmed officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command commenced investigations into emails allegedly received by a woman between July and September.
“Following inquiries, a 68-year-old man was arrested at Darling Point yesterday (September 26),” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
“He was taken to Waverley Police Station and charged with use carriage service to menace, harass or offend.”
Edkins was initially refused bail by police before it was granted with numerous conditions by Magistrate Ross Hudson at Waverley Local Court on Tuesday.
The Darling Point man is not to go near, contact or try to contact Ms Sloane or any prosecution witness except through a legal representative.
Edkins is further prohibited from using email to communicate for any purpose and is to engage with recommended treatment, attend medical appointments and take prescribed medication.
The elderly man also appeared briefly at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday in relation to a provisional apprehended violence order police sought on Ms Sloane’s behalf.
The specific requirements of the order could not be released by the court while the order remains provisional only.
The matter was adjourned to meet up with Edkins’ criminal charges at Downing Centre Local Court on October 25.
