The 24-year-old man accused of punching a police officer in broad daylight has pleaded not guilty to assaulting the constable at Bondi Junction.

Hayden Jessie Beggs, who court documents show is from Buff Point on the central coast, sat quietly as his lawyer entered the pleas at Waverley Local Court on Friday.

The officer in question was left with a minor thumb injury after the altercation on Oxford St about 2.30pm on Thursday, which played out during a relatively busy period of trade near the Westfield centre.

Police allege Beggs and two other men were “acting suspiciously” outside The Eastern before a chase had ensued after the officers identified themselves.

After making it across the road, police say Beggs stepped in front of the officer who had apprehended one of the men, and punched the eastern suburbs constable in the side of his head.

The officer suffered the minor thumb injury after attempting to block the alleged blow.

At 7.30pm, police had arrested Beggs at a nearby establishment on Bronte Rd, just metres from where the alleged attack had unfolded earlier that day.

A revocation of parole warrant had recently been issued prior to his arrest, police said.

Beggs has pleaded not guilty to charges of obstructing, hindering or interfering with a police officer and assaulting an officer occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in October, with a brief of evidence ordered by his lawyer.
