Clover Moore’s historic run as lord mayor has continued, though her control of the City of Sydney has taken a major hit for the first time in her 20-year tenure.
Despite early polling results showing it’s likely the long-time lord mayor and her team of independents will win four places on the council, down from the five positions required to form a majority, she thanked Sydney for “keeping Town Hall independent, progressive and community-led”.
Labor and the Greens are set to pick up an extra seat each, while the Liberals will drop from two to one councillors as counting continues.
“I’m grateful for the support to continue our work ensuring Sydney is the best place to live, work in and visit,” Ms Moore said.
“I’m so proud of our track record of achievement, and excited about the work ahead. City-building takes time, careful planning and tenacity.”
The 78-year-old added that she found the work “energising” and she was “ready to take our work to the next level”.
On election day, independent candidate Yvonne Weldon, who is tracking to be elected to the City of Sydney for a second term, said there was a “strong desire for change” before declaring Ms Moore’s majority was “on thin ice”.
“I’ve been very heartened by the response today and during this election.
“I’m proud of our positive and community-led campaign.”
As it stands, Ms Moore’s polling and for her team of independents has dropped from the 2021 election. The team of five, including herself, meant she had the balance of power on the 10-member council.
Heading to the eastern suburbs, Waverley Council has favoured the Liberals across the board.
“Initial vote counting suggests big swings to the Liberals across all wards,” Liberal councillor Will Nemesh said.
“We are humbled by the support and the trust placed in us by our wonderful community.
“We are committed to bringing fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and making a meaningful impact across Waverley.”
The Liberal team is looking like it will welcome fresh new faces, including journalist Michelle Stephenson and business owner Katherine Westwood.
Indigenous Greens councillor Dominic WY Kanak is likely to return as incumbent mayor Paula Masselos looks to retain her spot on council.
The Liberals are likely to have dominated on Woollahra Council with strong numbers across the local government area.
Polling has also been strong for Residents First Woollahra.
