Sydneysiders have been urged to plan ahead and use public transport this weekend, with major roads along and around the Sydney Marathon route to be closed.

About 40,000 runners are expected to run along the iconic course on Sunday, starting in North Sydney before crossing the Harbour Bridge.

Participants will then go around the city, venture into the eastern suburbs and head back to the finish line at the famous Opera House.

Roughly 150,000 spectators are set to cheer on their mates as the event looks to become the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major.

Event organisers have urged Sydneysiders to “opt for public transport”, using the city’s new Metro as well as other key public transport services, which will each play a vital role in getting thousands of entrants to the start line.

“The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS provides an incredible opportunity for tens of thousands of participants from Sydney, interstate and overseas to enjoy the rare privilege of running across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, traffic-free,” event director Wayne Larden said.

“With spectators flocking to the course to witness one of Australia’s most spectacular events, we understand that this may affect some residents’ plans.”

Additional train and bus services will run throughout the day, including early morning transport services to the new start line.

NSW Police have established a high-visibility operation to ensure the safety and security of all participants, event staff and the wider community.

Operation Commander, Superintendent Paul Devaney, has urged runners to take this opportunity to plan ahead.

“Tens of thousands of participants are expected to make their way to the Darling Harbour precinct over the next four days,” he said.

“To avoid any last-minute issues, we encourage you to get to the running show early to collect your event kit and drop off your finish-line belongings.”

Mr Devaney said runners are reminded “not to leave valuables” in the provided bags.

“If you’re unable to attend the running show, you can have a friend or family member who can provide your race information collect your kit on your behalf,” he said.

“We encourage the runners and anyone else attending the event to utilise the many public transport services on offer.”
