A young woman caught with 12 bags of cocaine in Bondi Junction has told a court she turned to selling drugs after losing her job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kazie Rahmouni, 18, from Homebush, fronted Waverley Local Court on Wednesday where a magistrate labelled her offending a “blight upon the community”.

The court heard the aspiring hairdresser was stopped by police on Adelaide St in Bondi Junction, during the night of Saturday, June 20.

Police had earlier seen her pick up and drop off a passenger in a rented vehicle and became suspicious of drug supply.

She was sentenced on Wednesday at Waverley Local Court.

The agreed facts stated police found $1800 in her possession.

Police asked her multiple times if she had any drugs in her possession and she produced 12 bags of cocaine.

“The accused removed a plastic bag from inside her underwear. Inside this bag contained 12 individually wrapped bags of white powder,” the agreed facts stated.

The combined weight of the drug was about 8g.

Rahmouni was convicted on Wednesday of three charges including supply prohibited drug and deal with proceeds of crime which she pleaded guilty to.

She was fined $750 and sentenced to a community correction order with supervision for 12 months.

Magistrate Ross Hudson scolded her for her “selfish” behaviour after hearing she turned to selling drugs after losing a job.

“These matters are prevalent among the eastern suburbs unfortunately. They are a blight upon the community,” Magistrate Hudson said.

He said she did not know what was inside the drugs she was selling and what damaging effects they could have on others, including those who were struggling with drug addiction.

“I represent the community and their expectations.

“Their expectation is that just because people fall on hard times they do not go out and sell drugs.”

He said “this has to be an awakening” for the offender and remarked there were other ways to gain financial help if she was out of work.
