FORMER cartoonist Karen Barbouttis has worked for the likes of Hanna-Barbera and Disney but today you will find her in the studio of her $4 million Dover Heights home working on her own pieces of art.
“I was a cartoon animator for about 25 years and then I went to art school in 2008 and have been exhibiting and practising my own art for the last three years,” Mrs Barbouttis said.
“The reason I got started drawing was because I won a major art prize in 2011 when I finished art school and that gave me a kick start for an exhibition. I draw animals, it’s a very niche art,” she said.
Ms Barbouttis also worked for Yoram Gross Studios on their Dot and the Kangaroo and Dot and the Koala animations.
Her studio is one of her favourite areas in the home she owns with her husband John.

Mr Barbouttis’s parents bought the Gilbert St property in 1953. It is now on the market with price expectations of $4 million.
“[His parents] renovated it in the ‘70s and we renovated it again in the ‘90s when we moved in,” she said.
“The studio is in the attic. It was originally going to be a storage area but I decided to use it as my studio.”
“It’s a place where I can get away. It has a separate door and I like the light, the quiet and the isolation from the rest of the house.”
The three-level home has a curved facade, four bedrooms and uninterrupted harbour views from the living areas.
“We wake up with views every morning. The views are different every day, from morning to night,” she said.
The property is listed with The Agency’s Daniel Baran and co-agency Anderson Estate Agents. It is set to go under the hammer on September 13.
