A young man who made headlines when his mother allegedly stabbed him inside their multimillion-dollar home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has admitted to stealing money from an elderly victim while high on drugs.
Hugo Ball, 23, was thrust into the news when he was allegedly stabbed by his own mother inside their Bellevue Hill mansion in November last year.
His mum Samantha Palmer was arrested over the alleged attack but is yet to enter a plea.
Ball has spiralled since the incident and has faced court for separate offences during recent months and has even been admitted to hospital.
About a month after the alleged stabbing, he was charged with damaging property at his father’s home in Paddington, following a heated dispute over prescription medication.
He pleaded guilty to that offence but avoided a conviction.
This week, the Scots College graduate was again set to face court for an offence of stealing related to his taking $400 from an elderly woman at Westfield Bondi Junction on Monday, May 17.
A court heard Ball, who has a history of drug abuse issues, had recently been admitted to hospital and he could not attend court.
His lawyer entered a plea of guilty on his behalf for the single charge of stealing.
The agreed facts stated he waited close to a 71-year-old woman as she withdrew money from a Westpac ATM during the afternoon of the offence.
He snatched the money as it came out of the machine but did not touch the elderly victim in the process.
The agreed facts stated he made a run for it with cash in hand and he was chased by a witness.
Ball dropped $150 in front of the witness – which was returned to the victim – but made off with the remaining $250.
The theft was caught on CCTV footage and he was arrested a few days later.
After his arrest, the agreed facts stated he told police he could not remember much about the theft as he was “high on ice and Xanax” at the time.
He will be sentenced in August. His lawyer asked for Ball to be excused from attending on the next occasion due to his hospitalisation.
