ALICE McCairn is hoping the thousands of hours she has put into training this year will pay off when she competes at the Australian Gymnastics Championships.
The 15-year-old from Bronte earnt her spot on the NSW team when she won the Level 8 seniors division last month.
“I train five days a week,” Alice said. “I enjoy the challenge and being able to have a go at new skills and develop physically and emotionally.”
Alice, who started gymnastics aged four, has been nominated for Junior Sports Star Individual in the NewsLocal Local Sports Stars awards.
This is awarded to athletes aged 18 years or under, who demonstrate the greatest achievement, dedication, fairness and sportsmanship.
Alice’s manager Jill Cleaven, who nominated her, said the teenager never gave up. “Her dedication and persistence in execution of her required skills has paid off,” Ms Cleaven wrote.
“Not only is she dedicated to her training but she is always willing to help others achieve their goals by mentoring the up and coming younger gymnasts.”
Alice said she was looking forward to the nationals this month in Melbourne.
“My best event would be vaults but I really do enjoy the beam because it’s so elegant to watch,” she said.
“Competing in it feels amazing even though it can make you feel quite nervous.”
In the lead-up to the competition, Alice has ramped up her training while juggling her Year 11 schoolwork at Kincoppal.
“It’s not a problem, it’s what I love to do,” she said.
“It’s just part of me now, I grew up doing it for fun and it’s still one of the most fun things I do in my life.
“My best friends, I have done gymnastics with since I was so young. The people you meet are incredible.”
