A man was taken to hospital with deep cuts to his face after an alleged glassing attack at a Bondi Junction hotel on Sunday.
Grant Hawkins, 42, was arrested after the incident and on Monday faced court alleged to have glassed the man at The Grand Hotel at 3.30pm.
Emergency services were called to the venue following reports a man had been struck in the face with a glass.
Hawkins has been charged and told a court on Monday he “felt threatened” prior to the bloody incident.
Police said Joseph Anderson, 23, had to be treated by paramedics at the hotel and was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital with deep cuts to his face. He has since been discharged from hospital.
After being arrested, Hawkins spent a night behind bars before appearing at Waverley Local Court wearing a blue prison jumpsuit on Monday.
His defence lawyer said it was Hawkins first time in jail and the incident only happened because he “felt threatened”.
His defence lawyer also said Hawkins was yet to see the CCTV footage which would make the situation clearer including any alleged threats.
Hawkins pleaded not guilty to reckless grievous bodily harm and his matter was adjourned until April 22.
The police prosecutor said Hawkins had been sentenced over violent offences in the past and it was a serious offence.
Magistrate Greg Grogin granted him bail with strict conditions including to abstain from alcohol, to report to police daily and not to enter any premises that sell alcohol.
He must also reside with his partner in Glebe while on bail.
When he was released, he left Waverley police station without shoes and still wearing his jumpsuit but returned to the area soon after with a fresh change of clothes and some Adidas shoes.
