A former Orthodox Jewish youth leader has been extradited to NSW over allegations of a historic sexual assault in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in the 1980s.
David Cyprys, 51, appeared via video link at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday after being arrested by Eastern Suburbs detectives in Ararat, Victoria on Wednesday.
During the brief appearance his defence lawyer Steven Doupe said his client was “unnourished” from a lack of Kosher food being offered to him in remand at Surry Hills police station.
A lack of access to his Jewish texts was also causing “great distress” to Cyprys, Mr Doupe said.
The former leader of the Yeshivah Centre in St Kilda East, a Jewish youth facility incorporating a Synagogue and boys’ and girls’ school, faces a category four sexual assault charge for an assault and act of indecency.
Melbourne's Yeshivah Centre has a sister facility located at Flood St, Bondi.

Cyprys had been apprehended by officers from Ararat Criminal Investigation Unit while being released from a correctional facility in the western Victoria town.
“He was taken to Ballarat Local Court where he was met by detectives from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command where the application for extradition to NSW was granted,” police said in a statement.
Cyprys was escorted back to Mascot police station about 6.45pm on Wednesday where he was charged and refused bail.
Magistrate Clare Farnan heard on Thursday the charge related to an arrest warrant issued in NSW in 2015.
Cyprys’ matter will return to court next week for a bail application.
