WATCH out Usain Bolt, Felix Long is coming for you.
The 15-year-old sprinter is about a second slower than the Jamaican champion’s personal best of 9.58 for the 100m race.
“My personal best is 10.97 for the 100m and 22.19 for the 200m,” the Bondi Junction athlete said.
Felix has been nominated for the Local Sports Stars Individual, awarded to athletes aged 18 years or under who demonstrate the greatest achievement, dedication, fairness and sportsmanship.
Felix has a tally of 12 national medals. His most impressive performance was winning the under 16s 100m race and the 4x100m and 4x200m relays, also placing third in the 200m race at the Australian Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park in April.
“The biggest challenge at nationals was not doing as well as I would have liked in the 200m event on the first day,” Felix said.
“But I kept focused and I didn’t think about losing.”
Felix said his positive attitude helped him win the national title in the 100m race a couple of days later.
He now has his eyes on making the Australian athletics team for the Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games.
“I believe anything is possible,” Felix said.
“I love how you don’t have to rely on anybody else in athletics.
“You get out what you put in.”
Nominations for the five categories of the Local Sports Stars awards are open until August 31 at localsportsstars.com.au
