Election ballot draw for Wentworth sees Phelps land last

The ballot box draw has thrown a surprise in Kerryn Phelps’ direction, though she may see it as an omen as voters in Wentworth head to the polls on May 18.

An independent has taken out the prized top spot on the ballot paper in Wentworth - but it is not Kerryn Phelps.

This afternoon’s ballot draw has seen the incumbent MP Dr Phelps land in the last spot on the ballot, in seventh.

Independent Dr Phelps, however, may see that as an omen after wrestling the seat from the Liberals at last year’s by-election, despite being in 15th (second last).

“It just means they will have to look a little further down to find my name but as long as they put me as number one that is all that matters,” she said.

Independent candidate Matthew Drake-Brockman will sit in the number one position when voters head to the polls on May 18.

Dr Phelps’ closest rival last time around, Liberal Dave Sharma, has drawn in fifth with the Greens’ Dominic Wy Kanak in sixth as she attempts to retain the seat she won last November with a swing of 19 per cent.

Mr Sharma was further down the ballot last year too, in ninth.

“The voters in Wentworth are a well-informed group,” he said.

“I’m sure they will cast their vote for whomever they believe will be their most effective representative.”

Labor’s Tim Murray has scored second spot, running again after finishing in third with 11.5 per cent of the vote at the by-election.

Mike Bloomfield of the Australia United Party has landed in third place, listing his residence with the Australian Electoral Commission as in North Sydney.
