Vicious Sydney brawl lands five cops in hospital

A Potts Point nightclub employee who leapt to the aid of his family members when they got into an all in brawl with police has pleaded guilty to his part in the melee.

Daniel Malupo, 32, of Brighton Le Sands was originally charged with 13 offences relating to the night of violence last October which left five officers injured.

The court has previously heard Malupo began “dragging” officers off his family members yelling “Get off him, don’t hurt him”.

The Riot Squad was called in to disperse the brawlers and six of Malupo’s other family members were also charged over the bloody incident at the front of the Flamingo Lounge.

Malupo appeared in Sydney Central Local Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to three charges of assault police and one of carrying on security activity without a licence.

All other charges against him were withdrawn.

The court was also told on a previous occasion Malupo had an acquired brain injury as a result of a serious car accident in 2010 which hinders his decision making.

Magistrate Robert Williams directed Malupo to present himself to the Parramatta District Office of Community Corrections for a sentencing assessment report within the next week.

He will be sentenced in Downing Centre Local Court on October 28 by Magistrate David Price – the same magistrate who dealt with his co-accused.

Malupo, who appeared before the court dressed head to toe in black and was supported by a family member in the public gallery, will remain on bail.

Maria Usaia, 22, of Airds was previously sentenced to an 18-month Community Corrections Order for assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty and occasioning bodily harm.

For two counts of assaulting an officer in the execution of duty, she was sentenced to a 12-month Community Corrections Order and she was also fined $1000.

Sione Usaia, of Ambarvale, had his charge of affray withdrawn and was convicted on a single charge of drug possession.
