A former federal political and a Sydney religious organisation’s committee member is set to appeal his conviction for choking someone.
Calamity Monitoring CEO Daniel Gideon Lewkovitz, 49, was convicted of intentionally choking a person without consent on December 3 last year in Waverley Local Court after a defended hearing before Magistrate Michael Barko.
Mr Barko sentenced the former federal Wentworth Liberal Democrat candidate to a 12-month community corrections order.
An alternative charge of common assault was withdrawn and dismissed.
Lewkovitz is now set to appeal the court’s decision.
The 49-year-old’s appeal hearing is set to occur at Sydney District Court on July 2 before Judge John Pickering.
The appeal comes after the court found Lewkovitz did choke someone close to him.
Along with a brief stint at federal politics in 2022 – where he garnered just 1.5 per cent of the Wentworth electorate vote – Lewkovitz was also listed as a committee member for the Australian Jewish Association, a community organisation led by Dr David Adler in support of “centre-right, conservative Australian values”.
He is no longer a member.
The organisation specifies its advocacy for policies advancing “individual liberty, economic freedom, limited government, a strong national defence, and the primacy of Australian law”.
