A Sydney Coles has given a glimpse into the future of supermarket shopping with the introduction of cutting-edge retail technology. We went down to test it out.

Lines at the supermarket will be a thing of the past as Coles stores across the country embrace a sleek new style of self service checkout.

Coles is now establishing the hi-tech check-outs, complete with their own conveyor belts and cutting edge antitheft technology.

The supermarket giant has promised it will do away with the annoying glitches which constantly prompt you to call for staff assistance and “remove item from bagging area”.

The Westfield Bondi Junction Coles is the second in Sydney to unveil the fancy new technology this week after it was successfully trialled in a neighbouring eastern suburbs store at Westfield Eastgardens.

The four new check-outs have already been in heavy use by customers and Coles eastern suburbs regional manager Jim Benakis said the feedback had been overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s the way of the future,” Mr Benakis said.

“We’re allowing people with larger shops to still be able to go through self serve.”

Store manager Rhys Ware said the new check-outs were both “friendlier and faster” than their predecessors which were prone to glitches.

“Before if you wanted to go through self serve with a trolley full you’d be saying ‘oh no I’m not taking that through that’s painful’,” Mr Ware said.

“The positive feedback we have already received is incredible.”

So far 11 stores across NSW have been fitted with the new style of checkout.

Other new additions to the Westfield Bondi Junction include a “nebulising mist” and cool plate system in the fresh produce section to ensure fruit and veg is kept in top condition.

The store has also made the switch to refrigerant gases technology in the chilled section which greatly reduces carbon footprint.
