When the students at Bondi Public School were given the opportunity to honour their principal after his tragic death from a heart attack, they didn’t skip a beat.
Michael Jones, who died last May while on leave after undergoing heart surgery, was the school principal for 12 years.
He is credited with taking the school from a tiny 75 students to one that is thriving and sought after.
This year the children and their parents raised an impressive $18,000 for the Heart Foundation and skipped a collective 247 hours as part of the Jump Rope For Heart initiative.
Acting deputy principal Kate Owen said not only did the students raise an impressive amount of funds but they chose to donate the prizes sent to them by the Heart Foundation to Bobin and Wytaliba Public Schools which were destroyed in last year’s bushfires.
“This generous gesture by our students exemplifies the Bondi spirit, recognising that our students have the power to make a difference to the peoples lives around them,” Ms Owen said.
“Students at Bondi Public School have a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility and have been proud to support the Heart Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart this year.
“Our students are well-informed citizens and are active members of our community who value kindness, empathy and generosity.”
Heart Foundation’s Director of Active Living, Adjunct Professor Trevor Shilton, thanked the students.
“As the Bondi Public students have discovered, Jump Rope for Heart is lots of fun and great exercise, but it also helps the Heart Foundation in its important work funding lifesaving research and health projects,” he said.
“Heart Foundation-funded research has helped make big advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease over the past six decades, including genetic conditions.”
