At a service celebrating the 32-year-old’s life, his father John Spierin told a room full of mourners that his son had donated his organs.

The Irishman was the second Bondi clubbie to die within days after he collapsed from an aneurysm at his home last week.

Mr Spierin flew from Ireland for Saturday’s service at Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club where his son had been a member for two years.

“He was the perfect guy to be a donor,” he told about 150 teary club members, friends and family.

“Yesterday I was informed by St Vincent’s Hospital that his lungs were successfully transferred to an adult now off a ventilator. That’s enormously empowering and enriching to know.”

Mr Spierin said David’s kidney and liver also saved two people’s lives and that his eyes, bones and tendons would also be donated.

He said he was proud of his son who had moved to Australia and became a surf lifesaver, despite not knowing how to swim well.

“He built himself up ... he trained through winter,” Mr Spierin said. “He dreamt big and he came out here to live them.”

David died just days after popular clubbie Lee Bowman, 59, who collapsed from a stroke on Bondi Beach on New Year’s Day.

Devastated members scattered David’s ashes in the sea off Bondi to pay their respects.

Veteran club member John De Launey said: “It has been the worst week of my club life and I’ve been here 30 years.

“I’m still struggling with it. The great thing that has come out of this is that I’ve never seen my club colleagues so united and looking after each other.”

De Launey said David was one of the “keenest and most driven” people he had met.

“He was half my age but I learnt a lot from him,” he said.

Mr Bowman’s service will be held at the club on Sunday at 3pm. His ashes will be scattered off Bondi.
