An eastern suburbs dad allegedly misused his position as a national operations manager to facilitate the delivery of 130kg of ice, a court has heard.

Ahmed Sadi, 46, from Rose Bay, was arrested last week in relation to a 130kg ice bust with an estimated street value of nearly $100 million.

Police uncovered the haul of methylamphetamine inside a one-tonne piece of machinery in December which had allegedly been sent as air cargo from Central America.

Police seized the consignment at a Sydney freight depot before conducting a controlled delivery.

Police will allege in court that Sadi facilitated the delivery of the consignment to his workplace in Alexandria – a construction and building supplies company called Bremick.

During a bail application in Central Local Court on Monday, Sadi’s defence argued that he was not aware what was inside the delivery sent to Bremick, where he worked as the national operations manager.

“There is no indication (in the police facts) that the accused is aware that the delivery is a delivery of border-controlled drugs.”

She also argued that he had not gone beyond his normal capacities as a national manager to receive the delivery.

However, the prosecutor argued his behaviour was highly suspicious and consistent with someone who knew what was inside the shipment.

He pointed to the police facts that alleged the father-of-three was on annual leave when the delivery was set to arrive at Bremick, yet he went into work to “secure” the delivery.

“The only inference is that he knew what was included in that package and he wanted to personally ensure that it was looked after.”

The prosecutor also argued that the company did not import any goods from Mexico and it was a highly unusual delivery.

He said it was even more unusual that the national operations manager should take such concern over the shipment when it was deemed to have nothing to do with Bremick.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles refused his bail after reading the police facts and listening to the submissions.

“It seems to me that Sadi has shown very suspicious behaviour and appears to be aware of what is happening,” she said.

Sadi is one of three men to have been charged over the drug bust.

Ahmed Jarkas, 26, was arrested last month in Yagoona and charged with supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity).

Following that arrest, Sadi was arrested in Rose Bay and a 36-year-old man was arrested in Sylvania last week.

Sadi is facing two charges of knowingly take part in supply of prohibited drug and participate in criminal group contribute to criminal activity.

The 36-year-old man is facing one charge of participate in criminal group contribute criminal activity.

Bremick declined to comment.
