Mathoura man charged with aggravated break and enter dwelling

A man has been arrested in the state’s south after a police pursuit ended with him allegedly swimming across the Murray River and hiding inside a roof cavity.

A man who allegedly fled police by swimming down the Murray River – before being found hiding in a roof – has been arrested.

Police arrested the man wanted on an outstanding warrant for alleged break and enter offences at Mathoura on Monday.

About 2.40pm, officers attached to Murray River Police District received information the man was near the Edward River, in the Murray Valley National Park at Mathoura.

When police attended the location, the man allegedly jumped into the river and swam across.

Following further inquiries, police visited a home on Moama St, Mathoura yesterday morning, where they located the man hiding inside a roof cavity.

The 49-year-old man was arrested and taken to Deniliquin Police Station where he was charged with one count of aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company intend steal.

The outstanding warrant was also executed.

The Mathoura man was refused bail in Deniliquin Local Court yesterday.

He will reappear in court on Thursday April 13.
