An aged care worker and young mother has been lambasted by a magistrate after she was busted smuggling drugs into prison for her ex.

Emmalee Beavis, 23, was charged with introducing contraband to a correctional facility, prohibited drug supply and two counts of prohibited drug possession after she smuggled two balloons filled with Buprenorphrine strips inside her bra into Junee Correctional Centre.

Buprenorphine is a prescription drug used to treat heroin and methadone dependence.

A court heard Correctional Services officers noticed Beavis acting nervous on her way into visit her ex-partner – an inmate at the jail – before asking if she had any contraband on her person.

Magistrate Miranda Moody at Wagga Wagga Local Court said guards took particular notice of Beavis after she was previously seen on CCTV passing an unknown item to her ex during a prior visit.

“You foolish woman, why would you do a thing like that,” Ms Moody said.

“He is your ex-partner, not even your current partner, you have put your career in danger committing such a serious offence.”

Beavis’s solicitor told the court the aged care worker was struggling financially and facing the threat of losing her job when she made the decision to supply the drugs for a financial benefit.

A police prosecutor formerly withdrew the two prohibited drug possession charges after Beavis pleaded guilty to the drug supply and smuggling contraband charges.

The red balloons secreted in Beavis’s bra contained 3.57 grams of the substance.

Ms Moody convicted Beavis on both counts and sentenced her to a 12-month community corrections order with a $1000 fine for the supply charge.

“It’s just a stupid thing she did to make money,’ Ms Moody said.

“There is no excuse for this behaviour, especially for someone who works in aged care.”

The court heard Beavis had no prior criminal record before these offences.
