Northern Wagga could be soon a hub for shoppers following a proposal for an $18 million Coles and Liquorland development.
Coles Group Property Developments Ltd has sought approval of its multimillion dollar supermarket and bottle shop on Messenger Ave, Boorooma, several minutes north of Wagga’s CBD.
The area has become a hub for development in recent times, including the new Estella Central Shopping Centre, amid a proposal for a three-level mega pub nearby.
In its application, the grocery giant is pushing to demolish car parks, retaining walls and light poles to construct the single storey building.
Inside will be the supermarket and bottle shop, accompanied by three loading bays and online shopping facilities.
More than 150 parking spaces will be included, along with four click collect spaces, four motorbike spots and a taxi/drop off bay.
The development is estimated at $18, 826,997.
It’s proposed Coles would trade from 6am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 10pm on Sundays.
The bottle-o would be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sundays.
Out of hours activities will also be permitted, including stock replenishment, bakery duties and fresh food preparation.
Developers estimate up to 120 people would be employed across the supermarket and bottle shop – mostly full and part time.
During peak trading times, it’s expected up to 285 customers and team members would be on site.
The developers state the recently opened FoodWorks at Estella “will not be sufficient” to service demand from the community.
The supermarket will “satisfy a significant local undersupply of supermarket facilities”, the documents before council state.
