Reece Kerry Egan admits to bashing man and assaulting partner in bathroom

A Wagga man has fronted court after using a hammer to bash and kick a man off his stairs less than two weeks after slamming his girlfriend against a bathroom wall.

A Mount Austin man has been remanded in custody after admitting to using a claw hammer to strike another man multiple times and assaulting his partner in a bathroom.

In Wagga Local Court on Tuesday, Reece Kerry Egan, who did not appear, had his guilty pleas formally entered via his lawyer, Elodie Somerville, to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

Egan, aged 29 and was unemployed, was also found guilty of destroying property and three counts of larceny.

Court documents state on February 27, Egan armed himself with a claw hammer and used it to bash another man who was visiting his housemate.

Egan accused the victim of “setting me up” before striking him numerous times in the ribs, head and hip, leaving large bruises.

When the victim was finally able to get up and run away, Egan chased and kicked him down the property’s stairs.

The victim, who staggered home before his neighbour called an ambulance, said it was the worst pain he had ever felt, court documents state.

Less than two weeks earlier in Mount Austin, Egan and his partner were in the bathroom where he started accusing her of being a prostitute and cheating on him.

During the argument, Egan jumped out of the shower and “slammed” the victim against a wall.

The woman tried to drive off before Egan picked up a statue and threw it at her car, smashing the windscreen.

Three days later, Egan also went to Liquorland at Sturt Mall and stole a can of Bundaberg Rum. CCTV captured him placing one can down in his pants before paying for another can then walking out of the store.

Later that day, he went to The Reject Shop on Baylis Street and stole a full-length mirror, broom set and canvas trolley, which totalled $54.

Employees chased him before calling the police.

Then on March 1, Egan went to Myer on Baylis Street and stole Adidas clothes worth $650 and left the store via the rear entrance.

He was arrested on March 3.

In court, bail was not applied for and formally refused.

Magistrate Christopher Halburd ordered a sentencing assessment report and Egan is required to attend via video link on May 27.
