Parking pains at Wagga Base Hospital may soon be solved, as a bold multimillion-dollar plan to address the health facility’s carparking problem is lodged with council.

This week a $30 million development application was submitted to Wagga City Council for a new multistorey six level car park as well as upgrades to two of the current car parks at the Docker St health complex.

If approved, the plan would see around 900 car spaces become available at the hospital, more than doubling the current number of car spaces.

Chief Executive Health Infrastructure Rebecca Wark said submitting the development application to council was a key milestone for the hospital’s bold carparking plans.

“At the completion of the $431 million Wagga Wagga Health Service redevelopment and the $30 million multi storey car park project, there will be over 900 carparking spaces on the health campus.” she said.

The six-storey car park will be constructed towards the northeast of the campus on the corner of Lewis Drive and Yabtree St, meaning Lewis House, Yathong Lodge and the Dental Clinic would be demolished to make room for the multistorey building.

However, construction of the car park will only commence after the final stage of the hospital redevelopment is operational in 2021.

The hospital said the car park could only be built after the hospital upgrade was final to ensure hospital services were not interrupted, as some existing services were temporarily located within the new car park footprint.

Current plans reveal the car park project is expected to be complete sometime in the later end of 2022.

The money to fund the project will be provided by the NSW Government with the contract for the project expected to be awarded in early 2021.
