A woman’s unborn child has died while she and her two young daughters remain in critical conditions following a serious crash in the Riverina on Saturday.

Just after 3pm on May 16, emergency services were called after a Subaru Liberty and truck collided at the intersection of the Snowy Mountains Highway and Gocup Road in Tumut.

The 29-year-old woman, who was 30 weeks pregnant, and her daughters were trapped inside the car for a short time, before being freed by emergency services.

The woman, from Nicholls in the ACT, and children, aged 10 and four, were treated for serious head injuries on scene before they were airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The woman was taken to Canberra Hospital while the girls were transported to Westmead Hospital.

The truck driver, a 58-year-old man, was not injured. He was taken to Tumut Hospital for mandatory testing and has since been released.

Emergency services were called to the crash scene involving a Subaru Liberty and a semi-trailer truck.

Officers from Riverina Police District established a crime scene and the Crash Investigation Unit began investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

On Monday, police said in a statement that the unborn child did not survive.

Wagga Police Inspector John Aichinger on Monday said the injuries to the 10 year old “are not good”.

“The likelihood of her surviving is not fantastic at this point,” he said.

“The driver of the truck is assisting police with inquiries.”

In a statement, Riverina police said for reasons unknown at this stage, the woman failed to give way and drove in front of the truck.

“The impact was extensive. Our deepest sympathies go out to all involved in this tragic incident,” police said.
