The new Wagga public school proposed in Estella has taken another step forward with the city council assessing a request to start land clearing works to pave the way for construction.

Wagga City Council last week determined to assess a NSW Education application to begin establishment works at the site — 52 Estella Rd.

These works — estimated to cost nearly $800,000 — include bulk earthworks and vegetation removal; temporary security fencing; temporary construction access; on-site construction parking and site office facilities.

The request to clear land for the school comes despite the Education Department yet to receive approval for its state-significant proposal, which is before Planning NSW.

A decision will likely be made soon, with the school expected to open in 2021.

A council spokesman said it would work with the State Government to produce the conditions before approval for clearing works.

“Once this is received, the application may be determined,” he said.

The proposed 3ha school is set to have 16 classrooms, accommodate 480 students from kindergarten to year six, 24 teachers and eight staff.

It would also be integrated with the Charles Sturt University campus.

The school is proposed to have flexible learning spaces to facilitate new ways of teaching and learning. It would include administration and staff facilities as well as a library, hall, canteen and covered outdoor learning areas.

Submissions on the plans for a new school closed in late December.

Among the submissions were Transport NSW’s south west director Lindsay Tanner, who said the intersection of Estella Rd and Boorooma St to the east would likely need an upgrade.

Mr Tanner said the intersection “will exceed capacity by 2030 and need upgrade to a roundabout, even without the school”.

Other submissions made included those from CSU, Riverina Water County Council, NSW Heritage Council and the Environment Protection Authority.

The education department has been contacted for more information about its application to council.

Wagga-based NSW Nationals member of the legislative council Wes Fang previously said the SSDA lodgement was a milestone.

“The project really starts to take shape when we see major milestones like this achieved and I’m excited to hear feedback from the public about the SSDA submission and the artist impressions,” Mr Fang said.

The proposed school is part of the state government’s $6.7 billion investment during the next four years to deliver 190 new and upgraded schools.
