Police continue to appeal for the public’s help after several grave sites were damaged at a Riverina cemetery.
About 4pm on Sunday, police officers were called to the Cootamundra General Cemetery, on Olympic Highway, following reports of damage to a number of headstones.
Police said in a statement, while officers are not treating the damage as targeted, investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Initial inquiries suggest some sort of vehicle hit four of the headstones before driving off.
Wagga Police Inspector Adrian Telfer urged anyone with any information to come forward.
“We don’t believe it’s anything malicious involved, but we are investigating a motor vehicle accident,” he said.
“That person has failed to stop to identify themselves.
“If that is you, please come forward. If you know anything about it, please come forward.”
Inspector Telfer also said based on the assessment of the scene, it appeared to be accidental.
“We’ve been speaking with council and they’re looking to fix those straight away,” he said.
Police have spoken with families affected by the damage.
Inquiries are continuing.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Cootamundra police on 6942 0099 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
