Eric Weissel Oval in Wagga set for transformation into new townhouses after council approval
A central site vacant for roughly a decade and described as an eyesore has taken a step forward to being revitalised as an urban area after gaining council approval.

The site of the former Eric Weissel Oval could be transformed into an urban area in a bid to boost surrounding services and to meet the city’s population growth to 100,000.
The progress comes after Wagga councillors yesterday approved a concept application for a future staged development at the 3.5-hectare site at 231 Gurwood Street.
The application provides only an overarching development scenario with any future proposed works subjected to a separate development application.
Should future building works go ahead, they are proposed to be 2-3 storey terrace houses and town houses that will be compatible with existing residential character of the area.
The site - close to key locations such as the CBD, health and knowledge precinct and the Morgan Street business area - is currently a medium-density residential zone with previous structures including a clubhouse and grandstand.
Only hardstand surfaces and retaining walls remain in place.
Speaking at Monday’s meeting, Cr Vanessa Keenan said the progress was “a great sign for the community”.
“It’s been on the books for a number of years now. The sight is a bit of an eyesore these days,” Cr Keenan said.
Similarly, Cr Rod Kendall said the approval was a significant part of the process to the final development.
“It gives a fair bit of clarity to that developer on the path forward,” he said.
“It’s a really significant part of the application process. It gives us the knowledge of the concept … and what issues we need to highlight to the developer.”
Cr Kendall said he would like to see more developers to use this process of staged applications.
A council report states that exhibitions of development concepts for the site have not resulted in substantial or widespread community objection.
