One boy has drowned and another two have survived after the trio got into difficulty while swimming at a popular south coast lagoon.

Emergency services were called to Werri Lagoon, at the northern end of Werri Beach in Gerringong, about 5.15pm on Wednesday following reports three children were in trouble in the water.

Police said two of the boys were able to clamber back to shore while a lifeguard went to the aid of the third boy.

Their immediate conditions and ages were not known.

“Two teenage boys made their own way to safety with a third brought to shore by a lifeguard; however, the boy was unable to be revived,” police said in a statement.

“Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District have commenced an inquiry.

“That part of the lagoon is not patrolled.

“A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.”

The incident is the second drowning in less than a month at Werri Beach, where a 66-year-old woman died on December 21.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, on an unpatrolled section of the beach, after being pulled unconscious from the water by an off-duty teenage surf lifesaver.
