A small street in a south coast hamlet could soon be transformed into a multimillion-dollar senior housing development, if plans for the apartment complex are approved by council.
Developers Villa Life have submitted a $2.8m proposal to construct a senior living apartment at 3 Tura Beach Dr, Tura Beach, to the Bega Valley Council, with the proposal currently sitting on public exhibition.
Planning documents reveal the construction of seven two-storey unit blocks on the street, with the block currently owned by the developers.
A spokesman for Villa Life said the site was originally part of the existing commercial land containing the Tura Beach Woolworths and service station development, however the proposed land had since split from the existing services and was now a vacant block.
The spokesman also said residential units would still be permitted on the land, despite being next to an existing Woolworths, as the area was zoned to allow commercial and residential.
“The proposed development consists of residential housing for seniors through seven seniors units to be constructed in two stages located behind the commercial development complying with State Environmental Planning Policy,” the spokesman said.
He said the development was proposed due to a need for senior and retiree housing in the region.
“The development will meet the current demand for seniors residential living requirements in the Tura area,” he said.
Bega Valley based realtor for Coastal Property Group Tammy Carroll told The South Coast News the region needed more senior housing.
“I come across a lot of people who are semi-retired, looking to fully retire, but they have to move interstate because there’s really nowhere for them to downsize into senior unit style housing on the south coast,” she said.
“I know a lot of elderly people in the area who go on waiting lists to get into the few senior housing areas we have because there just isn’t enough, which is why they move.”
Plans indicate the construction of the seven, two-storey units would not affect the aesthetic surround area of Tura Beach and would not impede on height limits.
Plans also reveal the construction would not involve the demolition of vegetation on the block, or the removal of any trees.
Units will range from two to three bedrooms and each include car parks, living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
The $2.8m development will remain on public exhibition until June 18.
