A south coast man has claimed his weed was spiked with amphetamines after a drug driving charge saw him breach Supreme Court bail, a court heard.
Trevor John Fleet did not face Bega Local Court on September 14 after pleading guilty to driving with an illicit drug present in his blood and driving with a cancelled licence.
Mr Fleet’s lawyer Jennifer Chalker told the court her client denied using amphetamines, and had smoked cannabis likely spiked with the drug.
She told the court the practice was a “new thing”, and her client was unaware he had taken the drug.
The court heard Fleet had been deemed a close contact of a positive Covid case while in the privately-run Parklea Correctional Centre, and was unable to appear on video link.
Ms Chalker told the court her client had been “in isolation for quite some time”.
She told the court Mr Fleet, a partial paraplegic, had driven to pick up his wheelchair from a friend’s home after he had earlier been taken to hospital from the home by ambulance.
She told the court the ambulance had been unable to fit his wheelchair and he had returned to his friend’s home to pick it up.
Magistrate Doug Dick fined Fleet $1200 and disqualified him from driving for six months.
The court heard, Mr Fleet had been due to face trial in Nowra District Court on August 23 after pleading not guilty to recklessly wounding his stepfather in the stomach with a knife last year.
The court heard the trial was vacated due to the Covid lockdown and has been rescheduled for February next year.
