Stephen Adams, South Coast Correctional Centre: Prison officer charged with smuggling three mobile phones for inmates

A NSW correctional officer is facing charges after he allegedly smuggled mobile phones for inmates into a South Coast jail for thousands of dollars.

A South Coast correctional officer is facing charges after he allegely received $6400 for smuggling goods into a jail.

Stephen James Adams, 50, of Old Erowal Bay was charged with agent corruptly receive benefit, holder of public office misconduct himself and recklessly deal with the proceeds of crime.

In court attendance notices presented to Nowra Local Court, police allege Adams received $6400 as a benefit for smuggling three mobile phones for inmates at the South Coast Correctional Centre on three occasions between November 1, 2019 and noon on April 16, 2020.

A police media spokesperson said Adams was suspended by Corrective Services NSW after his arrest at the Nowra prison on April 16.

Shortly after, a vehicle was searched at the correctional facility, where detectives allegedly seized two mobile phones.

Registrar Craig Cockburn heard the charges at Nowra Local Court on Monday, June 15 and no pleas have been entered.

Adams’s bail was continued and his next appearance is at Nowra Local Court on August 10.
