A NSW south coast town’s recently growing commercial district is set to expand further, with a regional council approving construction of a new retail precinct.
South Nowra recently gained several new retail businesses recently, with the previously empty Masters Building now housing electronic giant JB Hi-Fi, Anaconda, TK Maxx and Sydney Tools.
Now, months later, more retailers are heading to the rapidly growing commercial district, with Shoalhaven Council approving the construction of a five-unit retail precinct.
Set to be erected at 267 Princes Highway, South Nowra, the development will feature five retailers along with bathrooms and a staff kitchen.
The development will also see carparks constructed, as well as signage next to the highway and the removal of seven trees.
Submitted by developers Pacc Holdings, the retail precinct has not yet determined which businesses will run from the storefronts, but documents tendered to the development application reveal they will have the ability to run from 7am to 6pm, seven days a week.
A Pacc Holdings spokesman said the development presented a positive economic opportunity for Nowra.
“The site will generate employment and contribute to the economic development of South Nowra while ensuring compatibility with nearby commercial and industrial developments,” he said.
The new retail development comes months after the opening of several large-scale retailers in South Nowra, including JB Hi-Fi and Anaconda.
It also comes as residents voiced their concerns over a lack of retail options in the large regional centre of 22,000.
“I think the town is growing at a level now where we need more stores,” resident Henry Thurst said on social media.
Resident Jane McNally said new stores were a good thing, but questioned the 3.8km distance from the Nowra CBD.
“Those new stores were a great thing for the town obviously, but they’re a little out of the way to get to,” she said online.
Construction on the retailers at 267 Princes Highway, South Nowra, is set to start this year.
