Business owners and residents from Moruya CBD are relieved after the predicted flooding was ‘not as bad as it could have been’ after wild weather lashed the coastline.

Moruya residents and business owners have breathed a sigh of relief after a weekend of wild and worrying weather.

The NSW State Emergency Service issued an ‘an clear’ for residents and business owners east of the Princes Highway in Moruya’s CBD about 11am on Monday. More than 210mm fell in the Deua River Valley, west of Moruya from Friday to 9am on Monday. Over 90mm fell at Moruya Airport over the same spate of time.

On Sunday, an evacuation order was in place for streets east of the Princes Highway. SES crews quickly sandbagged the entrances to various properties in case the river flood the CBD.

On Monday, mostly farmland north of the town was flood-affected.

The Moruya River peaked just over two metres, a Eurobodalla Shire Council spokesperson said.

“Moruya River peaked just over two metres ‪between midnight and 1am last night, lower than predicted, but caused minor flooding of the eastern end of the CBD and north Moruya,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“We’re not aware of any shops or homes flooded, which is wonderful. The river is dropping nicely now with the tide.”

Minor flooding impacts were recorded at Nelligen, along the Clyde River.

“Our crews are already at work getting these areas cleared and repaired, and inspecting roads and bridges for damage,” the spokesperson said.

“Flooding in the Clyde, Moruya and Tuross river catchments has had more significant impacts in rural areas west of the highway, including isolating some properties. Thankfully, all river levels are now dropping.

“Our thoughts and care are with those cleaning up today.”

The next few days are forecast to be dry, with the chance of showers over Saturday and Sunday.
