South coast Covid-19: confirmed cases by postcode

As positive Covid-19 cases begin to surface in the Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven, and sewage testing in Cooma and Bega detects fragments of the virus, find out how many people have been diagnosed in your suburb.

What will happen when Australia opens?

Two positive Covid-19 cases on the south coast are refusing to tell NSW Health where they have been, delaying the identification of any exposure sites in the region, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says.

The Batemans Bay cases are not cooperating with contact tracers, as authorities do their best to find out if they visited any venues while infectious.

The first Eurobodalla case was reported on Monday, with the second, a close contact of the original case, returning a positive test today.

Mr Barilaro said the “Batemans Bay case is really complex”.

“Individuals aren‘t being cooperative, I will at least say that,” he said.

“I can‘t say any more than that but at least the case this morning is a close contact so that gives us some level of comfort but it remains very complex.”

The Batemans Bay District Hospital had limited capacity to treat Covid-19 patients.

He said people being uncooperative was the sole reason for delays in information being released.

“Level of movement that occurred, no registration of where they had been, not cooperative in telling us their movements or who they may have been in contact with... that makes it very difficult,” he said.

Mr Barilaro said NSW Health chief medical officer Dr Kerry Chant had powers to put people in quarantine and involve police in these sorts of situations.

“Everything has been tried here and they will continue to do that,” he said. ”We hope at some point we get more answers. It‘s very difficult to get people to tell the truth, we rely on people being honest.”

Nearby residents, concerned they may have come into contact with the positive cases unknowingly, have turned to Facebook to speculate where the duo may have been.

“I call bullshit that they didn’t go at least buy food. Wonder if they’re just refusing to cooperate as they clearly didn’t use check ins,” Kirraleigh Thomas wrote.

Mr Barilaro said he assumed another case announced overnight in Cooma, which is under investigation, was connected to the medical centre that had closed for deep cleaning.

It comes on the same day two more cases of covid were recorded in the Shoalhaven, as the local health district records a record daily rise in case numbers.

The Vincentia Medical Centre took to social media to tell patients the centre would be closed for two days, after being advised a positive case had sought treatment at the facility.

“All information required has been provided to the public health unit for assessment, and the public health unit will dictate our next actions,” they wrote.

“Out of an abundance of caution all staff are undergoing testing and we have elected to close, isolate and clean until staff are cleared of any risk.”

The Illawarra-Shoalhaven Local Health District recorded 34 new cases; 24 of them in the Wollongong LGA, seven in Shellharbour and two in the Shoalhaven. One case in Kiama is under investigation.

Zero cases were recorded in the Shoalhaven on Monday, after a spike in cases over the past week. There are now 14 cases in the LGA, the first since the Delta outbreak.

In the 24 hours to 8pm on September 7, New South Wales recorded another 1280 covid cases, and nine more deaths from the virus.

South Coast MP Shelley Hancock has called on her government to establish a vaccination hub in Nowra.

“With multiple cases detected in the Shoalhaven, it is vital that additional testing capacity and vaccination administration is available on the south coast,” she said.

“My electorate is home to many vulnerable people, front line workers who cannot work from home, and indigenous communities.”

Kiama MP Gareth Ward warned residents it was not a time to panic, but reignited calls for the government to form a “ring of steel” around the Illawarra to “protect” the region.

“Clearly people are still ignoring the rules, otherwise the spread wouldn’t be continuing to rise in terms of case numbers and I want to make sure we limit the case numbers in our region and do everything we can to reduce those numbers,” he said.
