A puppy mangled and mauled by two dogs at an off leash south coast park has been left with life threatening injuries.

Ashlea Newman had taken her eight-month-old Blue Heeler puppy, Rex, to the Jerry Bailey Oval – an off leash dog park in Shoalhaven Heads – on Thursday evening when shortly after arriving two Bull Arabs attacked.

The attack saw Rex lose his genitalia and suffer other injuries.

“It was the most horrific thing I’ve ever seen,” Ms Newman told The South Coast News.

“I think I’ll have PTSD after what happened to my poor dog.”

Ms Newman said she watched her dog being attacked while her husband, Jacob Beaven, attempted to fight off the aggressors.

Ms Newman said she had spoken to the Shoalhaven Council since the attack, with the ranger fining the Bull Arab owners $2600 and the owners voluntarily euthanizing their dogs on Saturday morning.

Shoalhaven Council confirmed the Bull Arabs were euthanized when asked by The South Coast News.

A fundraiser has been created for Ms Newman to fund Rex’s surgeries with more than $7000 raised in less than a week.

Rex has already had one surgery to reattach his genitalia, however more surgeries are expected in the future.

Close friend of Ms Newman, Lauren Turner, said while there were still issues, Rex had returned home.

“He may have head to toe stitches, drains coming from everywhere and puncture wounds all over his body, but he’s home,” she said.

“He’s definitely not the same Rex that we’re used to and we pray that he returns to his vibrant, happy self.

“The long term emotional effects of such a violent attack can stay with dogs forever.”

Ms Newman said she was amazed to see the community come out in support of her puppy following the “horrific” incident.

“The community has rallied around us,” she said.

“We’ve had people drop off flowers, a dog crate. The support has been incredible.”

The South Coast News has contacted Shoalhaven Council for a statement on the incident.
