It’s already got Kings Point, but a south coast councillor wants to go one better by having a real life monarch put the Shoalhaven region on the map with a royal visit.

As revealed by The Saturday Telegraph and later confirmed by Buckingham Palace, King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit NSW and Canberra in a whirlwind tour down under.

The monarchs will also visit Samoa to “celebrate the strong bilateral relationship with the Pacific Island Nation and the UK”, attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting with 56 other national leaders from across Asia, the Pacific, Caribbean and Africa.

The news has excited Shoalhaven Councillor Paul Ell, who revealed he would put forth a motion at the upcoming Shoalhaven Council ordinary meeting, inviting the royal leaders to the region.

Mr Ell said the visit would attract national and global attention, presenting the perfect opportunity to advertise the south coast to the world.

“The visit will undoubtedly attract national and international headlines, so it will be a great opportunity to showcase our region,” he said.

“It is also an opportunity for the King and Queen to meet with and acknowledge the contribution of incredible local volunteers and others giving service to our community including defence personnel.”

Mr Ell said his motion, which is set to be presented at the next ordinary meeting on July 22, would ask the council’s chief executive to write to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to seek the Shoalhaven’s inclusion in the itinerary and to offer any assistance needed with organisational arrangements.

“The motion also asks for the federal Member for Gilmore’s assistance with this request,” he said.

“Based on my limited research it would appear that the monarch has never visited the Shoalhaven previously, so this would be a truly historic occasion for the city if the invitation were to be accepted.”

As reported on Saturday, the historic royal trip is a scaled-back version of what the royals had planned due to the King’s ongoing cancer treatment, with all other Australian states and territories, as well as New Zealand, missing out on a spot on the itinerary.
