Richard Mayo: Alleged high-range drinker driver had “three or four drinks”

A Ryde man has allegedly blown five times over the legal alcohol limit after crashing into a stationary vehicle on the south coast.

A Sydneysider who stands accused of high-range drink driving told police he had only “three or four drinks” before he is alleged to have crashed into another car in Nowra earlier this year.

Richard Neil Mayo, of Ryde, was allegedly driving a black Toyota Prius southbound at around 4pm on January 26, 2022, when he collided with a white Lexus, waiting at traffic lights at the intersection of the Princes Hwy and Worrigee St in the Nowra CBD.

Police were called the scene where they allegedly breath tested Mayo with the 40-year-old returning a positive result.

Mayo was allegedly conveyed to Nowra Police Station where he undertook a breath analysis which returned a reading of 0.258, more than five times the legal limit.

In documents tendered to the court, police allegedly observed Mayo with glazed, bloodshot eyes, being unsteady, swaying and staggering and reeking of alcohol.

The documents also said the accused allegedly told police he had “three or four drinks” between 11am and 1pm.

Mayo’s licence was suspended and his car was impounded.

Mayo pleaded guilty and will appear in Hornsby Local Court on April 27.
