Radisson Hotels will be the likely brand of a planned multimillion dollar five-star south coast hotel with 360 degree views and a 120 seat restaurant.

Sydney-based Core Assets and Development group purchased the Eden Fisherman’s Club late last year, and the company’s managing director Mark Toma said this week the $65 million investment would be turned into a Radisson Hotel.

“This is a project we would love to do. It is fantastic for the community, especially after the bushfires,” Mr Toma said this week.

The club acted as an evacuation centre during last summer’s bushfire emergency and closed in March after the fires caused a 40 per cent downturn in trade which was then compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.

CEO Andrew Terry said the club was $1.5 million down on revenue and will now focus on its Eden Gardens Country Club retirement development of 116 townhouses and 16 houses and land packages.

“If anything saves our business, this will be it,” Mr Terry said.

Mr Toma said his company has more planned for the town with boutique apartments also on the cards.

Planned Quest Apartments will be part of the $65 million investment, he said.

Mr Toma said the stalling of foreign investment in Australia due to COVID-19 has provided the opportunity for local investors to look at towns like Eden.

“Eden has a lot of history and cruiseliners. We think Eden is a great place for people from Victoria and the ACT to visit,” he said.

“We have done the numbers on tourism and they are fantastic.”

Bega Valley Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said the shell of the iconic club will be kept in the new 65-room hotel, which will be known as The Sapphire at Eden.

“It is exciting because the future of the club has been up in the air,” he said.

“It was a brave move by the club’s board to sell, and the new development will be all good for Eden if it’s followed through right.

Mr Toma said a spa health retreat will also become part of the new Stephen Jones Architects designed hotel, which will include a pool, spas, saunas, gym, two conference rooms and a wedding reception centre.

He said the development will employ 200 trades advisers’ consultants and will create 50-80 part-time and full-time jobs when it opens late 2022.

“Core Assets and Development Group is also be focused on training of apprenticeships and other training services much needed to the area so as to grow the region and its services and will grow the area we look forward with working with all the community to achieve the best possible for the region,” Mr Toma said.
