A man has been arrested and charged after allegedly killing his wife before getting cold feet in an alleged suicide pact gone wrong on the NSW south coast.
The matter of Phillip Baldwin, 72, was mentioned in the Nowra District Court on Friday after he was charged with aid or abet suicide of another on August 25 last year.
The Bomaderry man is yet to enter a plea.
Documents tendered to the court allege Baldwin killed his wife, Joanne Maree Baldwin, on the morning of July 4 in Bomaderry last year after the pair had allegedly agreed to kill each other.
A source close to the investigation told The South Coast News that the alleged suicide pact was not a result of a terminal illness, rather a result of “family issues”.
It has not been revealed how the alleged incident took place, however it was described as “twisted”.
Following investigations, officers attached to the South Coast Police District arrested Baldwin on the morning of August 25, before he was later granted conditional bail.
In court on Friday, Baldwin’s lawyer – who wished to remain nameless – told the court his client was ready to enter a plea in the matter before asking the case be adjourned to next month.
The request was not opposed by Magistrate Lisa Viney, who ultimately adjourned the matter by three weeks.
Baldwin’s lawyer informed the court his client would need to enter his plea via video link, as he had since relocated to Victoria following the arrest and charges.
Baldwin will appear in the Nowra District Court on May 10.
