A man has been charged over the alleged murder of a well-known South Coast grandmother, leaving a quiet rural community in shock.
Louis Woodham, 37, was charged with murder on Friday evening, after 51-year-old Denise Brameld was found with stab wounds inside her Numbaa home by her son on Friday, who visited the property after failing to get in contact with her around 11.30am.
Upon finding Ms Brameld, her son called emergency services, however, NSW Ambulance paramedics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
“She suffered fatal injuries and it was quite confronting for first responders,” South Coast Police Detective Inspector Scott Nelson said.
It’s understood police arrested Woodham at a property across the road, with Detective Inspector Scott Nelson confirming he was known to police.
Homicide Detectives arrived at the property on Friday afternoon and were continuing forensic examination of the property on Saturday morning, with Detective Inspector Nelson saying it was too early to reveal the nature of Ms Brameld’s injuries and the nature of her relationship to Woodham.
“What I can say is that it is not a domestic violence incident,” he said.
He did, however, say police were not treating the incident as a random attack and that they may have been known to each other.
Woodham was charged in the early hours of Saturday morning, with his matter briefly mentioned by solicitor Rohan Harrison at Wollongong Local Court this morning.
Mr Harrison told the court his client did not wish to apply for bail and the matter was adjourned to August. Woodham will remain on remand in custody until his next appearance before the court.
On Friday, Ms Brameld’s nearby neighbour told the Illawarra Star the death of Ms Brameld — a grandmother to three young children — was “quite shocking” and “unbelievable”.
Tributes for Ms Brameld have started to flow online, with family and friends remembering her as a “beautiful lady” and a “loving mother an grandmother”.
