Police are investigating links between the suspected firebombing of a house on the NSW south coast and reports of a public place shooting on the same street a day earlier.
Emergency services were called to the home in Nowra after reports of a fire at 7am on Monday.
Insp David Cockram, of Nowra police, told reporters on Monday that the fire on Kembla Cl appeared to have been a work of arson.
Insp Cockram said while there was minimal damage caused by the blaze, they were treating the incident as suspicious.
He said material such as broken glass was found at the scene, indicating a flammable item, like a firebomb, was thrown at the premises.
“That is yet to be confirmed, but that’s what we’re investigating,” he said.
Insp Cockram said police were also investigating links between the fire and shots being fired on the same street at 6am on Sunday.
While shots were fired on the same street, they were not fired at the same premises as the possible firebombing.
“[The shots] are certainly something of interest to us,” Insp Cockram said.
“Investigations will be ongoing around that street and those premises and we would ask anyone with information to come forward.”
While no arrests or charges had been laid, Insp Cockram said police would be investigating a number of people and did not believe the attacks were random.
There is no suggestion that residents or former residents were involved in either the fire or the shooting.
The officer said the South Coast Police District was taking the situation seriously and understood those who lived on Kembla Cl would be fearful.
“We’ve had to increase police presence there today and that will continue, that will continue until we are satisfied that the community in that area is safe,” he said.
“We are taking this matter seriously and it’ll be our mission to put those before the court that are responsible.”
Insp Cockram has urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
