Nowra: Off-duty police officer charged for alleged illegal street race

An off-duty police officer who allegedly participated in an illegal street race which ended in a crash on the NSW South Coast has been charged following investigations.

The crash allegedly occurred on Moss St, Nowra.

A police officer who allegedly crashed his car during an illegal street race gone wrong while off-duty on the NSW South Coast has been charged following extensive investigations.

The 21-year-old constable attached to the command in the Southern Region allegedly crashed his BMW during an illegal street race in Nowra on November 16, 2023.

About 7.15pm, officers from the Nowra Traffic Highway Patrol were patrolling the Princes Hwy when they came across a BMW which had lost control and crashed near the intersection of Moss St, hitting a power pole.

The 21-year-old driver – who was uninjured – spoke with officers about the accident.

Police also spoke to an 18-year-old man who was driving a second vehicle.

The 21-year-old police officer is due to appear in Nowra Local Court on April 2.

Following extensive investigations by the South Coast Police District, officers will allege in court that the two men were involved in an illegal street race prior to the crash.

On Friday, February 16, the 21-year-old police officer was charged with organise and promote race between vehicles, drive recklessly or furiously or speed manner dangerous and negligent driving.

The police officer’s licence was suspended and, according to NSW Police, his employment status is under review.

He is set to face Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, April 2.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continues.
